Inland (real name Ed Davenport) is a British producer, DJ and founder of Counterchange Recordings based in Berlin. Known for his detailed and explorative techno, he’s released numerous EPs on his home label Counterchange (set up in 2013), and has appeared on Ostgut Ton, Figure, Infrastructure and Nonplus. In 2018 he released his debut Inland LP on Ostgut Ton sub-label A-TON, an Audio-Visual collaboration with conceptual artist Julian Charrière. Enamoured with UK dance music culture in the mid 90s, the burning, illicit energy of early rave mixtapes left a huge impression. Mystical bootlegs recorded at mass gatherings in fields or late night Radio One transmissions captured on cassette – their eternal spirit was absorbed and cherished. Now more than 2 decades later, Davenport Channels that fascination and energy into everything he works on, from his own studio productions, to live shows and DJ sets, and the creative curation of Counterchange. Davenport's first wave of productions emerged in 2006, characterised by a string of technoid minimal house records on German labels Gumption and Liebe*Detail. That sound morphed into a moody, broken-beat hybrid that peaked with key releases such as 'More Red Lights' on UK label NRK in 2011 and his 'Counterchange' LP as Ed Davenport the following year. His modernist, minimal-music indebted releases on Maeve ('Silver Walks' EP, 2015, 'Mendocino', 2018) highlighted his unique skill for storytelling within sound. Working closely alongside US artist Function between 2014 and 2017, the pair released the comeback record for Function's classic Infrastucture label, with their critically acclaimed 'Odeon / Rhyl' EP and went on to compile the heavyweight 'Facticity' compilation, also teaming up with the timeless 'Colwyn Bay' in 2016. Simultaneously, since 2013, Davenport's own Counterchange label has notched up over 13 releases - the idiosyncratic 'Solstice' EP (2013) a blueprint for the Inland sound. Primarily a home for his own productions, the label has also put out music from contemporaries like Boddika, BNJMN, Cassegrain & Tin Man, Magna Pia, Distant Echoes and Pharaoh & Yogg. In February 2020 Inland released the Stream State compilation, his biggest project to date, combining exclusive tracks from over 20 artists in a vibrant 4 x 12’’ package and DJ mix on Counterchange. Featuring long-time colleagues and personal heroes like Efdemin, DJ Skull, Joel Mull, Peter Van Hoesen, Mark Broom and many more, Ed also selected tracks from Berlin based artists Jamaica Suk, Johanna Knutsson and Fred Mann, and welcomed back BNJMN, P. Lopez and Distant Echoes to the label. The compilation was launched with release parties at FOLD London in collaboration with Codeword, Nitsa Barcelona, Vurt Seoul, Contact Tokyo and more, before the 2020 pandemic put an extensive tour to a halt. A collaboration with Swiss artist Julian Charrière, the debut Inland LP ‘An Invitation To Disappear' (A-TON LP 05, 2018) translates Davenport's soundtrack for Charrière's gallery-based video installation into eight tracks of rhythmically intricate electronics and spectral techno. Tracking through a palm oil plantation toward a totemic soundsystem on full blast, the LP and Film were debuted live to a full house at Berghain in September 2018. In recent years Davenport has gravitated more and more towards the contemporary art world, finding inspiration in the fruitful cross-pollination happening in Berlin's art and music scenes. Earlier sound design collaborations with Charrière have been exhibited in institutions in Lausanne ('Somewhere', 2014), Vienna ('Iroojrilik', 2017) and Mainz ('An Invitation To Disappear', 2018) while Davenport also made a soundtrack for duo Wermke / Leinkauf's '4. Halbzeit' video installation - part of the prestigious Berliner Herbstsalon at the Maxim Gorki Theatre, Berlin 2017. In 2019 soundtracked a video installation for Mischa Leinkauf’s first ever solo show, ‘Fiction Einer Nicht-Einreise’, at Gallerie Alexander Levy, Berlin. As a reaction to the surreal club-less pandemic experience in 2020, KW Institute curator Nadim Samman invited Inland to create a soundtrack for his hour-long lecture entitled, ‘Orpheus & The Technocave’, performed live in Berlin to a socially distanced crowd of 50 guests.
